He is usually called Padre Pio. He was born on May 25, 1887 in pietrelcina, a small town in southern Italy. On August 10, 1910, he was appointed priest.

On September 7, 1910, less than a month after he was ordained, when he prayed at his home in Piana Rome, Padre Pio received an invisible mark, the five wounds of Jesus crucified. Eight years later, on September 20, 1918, in prayer at the Rotondo monastery church in St. Giovanni, he had a mysterious encounter with Jesus and received visible air holes, wounds, and he continued to cover his hands, feet, and socks with great humility for the next fifty years.

Padre Pio is revered for his personal holiness and spiritual wisdom, so crowds turn to him for advice and encouragement. He also enjoys a high reputation as a good confessor. Many days, he spent as long as 12 hours in the confessional room, and in several years he reportedly heard as many as 25000 confessions. He not only gives wise advice, but also insight into the heart of the penitent, to determine whether he realizes or denies his guilt, and to help him point out and get rid of it.

As the number and number of pilgrims continue to increase, so does his troubles. His own fantail community and Vatican officials are increasingly jealous and sceptical, claiming his humiliation is a hoax and insisting that he is selling himself. Padre Pio has been investigated more than ten times, his clergy has been suspended, he has been banned from mass or confession. To him, being suspected, ridiculed and rejected is a kind of unspeakable pain, and he has been isolated for a long time. In those dark days, he never lost faith, kept a sense of humor, prayed firmly, especially before the Eucharist. He used to say, "I just want to be a poor monk in prayer." It was not until 1968 that Pope Paul VI officially approved the church.
